An 88-year-old woman died 28 days after health workers stopped giving her food or water, her devastated son said.
Sarene Taylor has been hospitalized after suffering a stroke a month ago, Doctors they told her there was nothing more they could do and began end-of-life careaccording to his son.
Rob Taylor, a former North Wales rural police officer, called this approach “inhumane” and “heartbreaking” for the family, saying it needs to change.
“It’s about the ‘ethics’ of sending your mother back to a nursing home from the hospital, where they left her to die”.
She did not criticize the nurses or medical staff but described the end of her mother’s life as “inhumane” and something one would not expect in these times.
Taylor said: “I understand end of life care, and the carers and nurses do a fantastic job, But to deny a human being food and water is shameful and we as a society need to make sure this doesn’t happen again.”.
He added: “The family thanks all of your messages and loving support over the past few weeks.” In an emotional video just days before her mother’s death, Taylor described the devastating situation her family had been left in.
“My 88-year-old mother has had a great life but unfortunately four weeks ago she was admitted to a North Wales hospital with a stroke.”
“I went to see her and spent time with her on Monday, three weeks ago the doctor told me there was nothing else they could do for her, they took her off all fluids and food and They put her in terminal care.”
“Wednesday, three weeks ago, they told me we had to take her from the hospital. So I arranged for her to be taken back to the residence.”
“This is not a story about illegality or legality, it’s about ethics. My mother is still alive, she has been 24 or 25 days without eating, without drinking, without IV, without anything, she is still alive, and it is inhuman and absolutely heartbreaking for the family and inhumane.”
“That so precious a woman has been allowed to lie in a bed in a residence – to be fair, to be seen once a day by a nurse, who does an outstanding job, is nothing against them or against the residence -, but Is it ethical to let her slowly die of dehydration and malnutrition before our eyes?”
