The shooter was identified as Audrey Hale, a 28-year-old woman from the school. Hale entered the building through the side door of the school and shot open the locked door, where she opened fire from the first floor of the building for 14 minutes. She said Hale believed she had used two assault rifles and a handgun in her assault.

The police, who received the report at around 10:13 a.m. that day, were immediately dispatched and subdued him at around 10:27. The shooter died after being shot by police. One police officer was also injured during the riot.

Police initially said the shooter appeared to be a female teenager, but upon confirmation, they corrected the shooter to be Audrey Hale, a 28-year-old woman from the area and school. Police said she identified herself as transgender.

Police believe the attack was premeditated by Hale. Among his belongings, the police checked a school map containing plans such as the date and time of the attack.

“We are closely monitoring the tragic situation,” Tennessee Governor Bill Lee said in a statement, asking “to pray together for the Nashville community.”

According to the U.S. nonprofit Gun Violence Archive (GVA), there have been 129 mass shootings in the U.S. this year alone. If four or more people are killed, excluding the shooter, it is defined as a mass shooting.

The United States recorded its 100th mass shooting on March 19 last year, and in 2021, the 100th occurred at the end of March. 2018-2020 hit its 100th at the end of May.

President Joe Biden mentioned this incident in a speech at the Small Business Administration Women’s Business Summit that day and repeatedly urged that the sale of assault rifles and mass magazines be regulated to prevent gun crime.

President Biden said, “Gun crime is tearing our society apart. The soul of this country is being torn apart.”
