To the ever-cited benefits of walnuts, there is now the theory that they may reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.

This statement comes from research funded by the Nutrition Research and Education Foundation of the International Nut Council of the United States and published by the journal Nutrients.

According to this studythis dried fruit would have the ability to modify the metabolism of L-tryptophan, a very important amino acid for the body and which is involved in various bodily functions.

For this survey, 95 obese or overweight people were followed up for 24 weeks on a weight loss and maintenance program.

During this time, 39 people ate pretzels as a snack while another 56 people ate nuts.

At the end of the observation period, the researchers analyzed fecal material and blood plasma samples to determine the effects of their different snacks.

People who ate walnuts they experienced a regulation of their blood pressure, a marker related to cardiovascular protection.

Additionally, they showed significant increases in blood serotonin levels. Something that benefits several bodily functions, including mood, sleep and digestion, and which is related to the aforementioned action on L-tryptophan.

Another plus: its intake was not associated with weight gain.

The nutritional benefits of the walnut
