Putin’s government has arrested an American Wall Street Journal journalist in Russia, accusing him of espionage

An American reporter from the Wall Street Journal He was arrested in Russia on espionage chargesand, the Federal Security Service (FBS) announced this Thursday, quoted by Russian news agencies.

“The FSB obstructed the illegal activities of US citizen Evan Gershkovich (…) Correspondent of the Moscow office of the US newspaper The Wall Street Journal,” the FSB said in the statement, quoted by the agencies.

He is “suspected of espionage on behalf of the US government” and of gathering information “on a company in the Russian military-industrial complex”.

The arrest of a foreign journalist for spying is unprecedented in recent Russian history. The arrest came amid heightened tensions between Moscow and Washington over the war in Ukraine.

Before joining the American newspaper in 2022, Gershkovich was a correspondent for AFP in Moscow and before that for the English-language newspaper Moscow Times.

Of Russian origin, the 31-year-old journalist is fluent in Russian and her parents live in the United States.

“The Wall Street Journal is deeply concerned about Gershkovich’s safety,” one US citizen said in a statement.
