“I underline the work done by Foreign Minister Juan Carlos Holguín e I’m sorry for your resignation“, expressed the president through his Twitter account.

He added that Gustavo Manrico, the current Minister of the Environment, will take the oath this Monday “as the person in charge of assuming this office”.

On Saturday, Holguín released a resignation letter addressed to Lasso on Twitter, in which he supports “personal reasons”. It is assumed that it is because he will devote himself to his political career.

“Thank you @LassoGuillermo for playing for Ecuador and giving us the opportunity to serve him. It wasn’t easy, but I am sure that for the country and for its presidency, which must be respected, this is the right decision,” he said on the same social network.

The now ex-minister noted that he was celebrating Manrique’s “successful appointment”.

Holguín resigned amid an impeachment trial brought by the opposition National Assembly against Lasso for a alleged embezzlement.

The 67-year-old center-right president believes that the trial raised by a sector of the Legislative Power and authorized by the Constitutional Court “It does not make sense”.

This is the second time that Congress – where the opposition is in a majority but scattered – has sought to remove Lasso from office.

Last June, in the midst of indigenous protests over the high cost of living, a group of deputies presented a motion to dismiss, but did not get the necessary 92 votes -out of 137 members of the assembly-, according to the constitution.
