An Egyptian influencer will be tried for “awakening sexual instincts”

The Alexandria Economic Court said in a statement that the trial will be held against the model after he was denounced by “violating the values ​​and principles” of Egyptian society and for “offending the public” with his posts about Instagram and TikTokwhere he has nearly a million followers in each and where he just appears posing and dancing.

“The videos represent an attack against family values ​​and principles, as they invite inciting immorality and awakening sexual instincts by showing the charm of one’s body,” the court said in the statement, which warned that this type of content should be age limited.

El Shimy, 29, was arrested two days ago upon arrival at Cairo International Airport and has since been held in the premises of a police station in Alexandria pending the end of the investigation and the start of the trial.

Many of these Egyptian influencers currently are behind bars after being convicted of those chargeswhich local and international NGOs consider “very worrying” and another new example of the lack of freedom of expression that exists in Egypt.
