At her son’s school sports day, a mother crosses the finish line first with her overwhelming running skills. As it turns out, this mother is known as a world-class Olympic gold medalist.
According to CNN on the 3rd (local time) and The Guardian in the UK, Jamaican sprinter and Olympic champion Shelley Anne Fraser (36) attended her 5-year-old son’s school sports day on the 31st of last month and took first place in the parents’ 100m race.
According to a video posted on social media at the time, Frazier took the lead as soon as he started. Then she set her pace, passing the parents behind her to reach the finish line first. Parents and students who watched this applauded and cheered.
Despite his short stature of 152 cm, Fraser boasted explosive early spurts and was called a ‘pocket rocket’. The same day, she posted on social media, “I had no intention of participating in the parent race,” adding, “As Olympians, I thought it wouldn’t make sense for my family to go home without winning a single gold medal.”
She continued, “My son Zion won a bronze medal in the steeplechase, and my husband, Jason, tried to win a gold medal in a dad-only race, but unfortunately failed.”
Fraser won gold medals in the 100m at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and 2012 London Olympics, and won a gold medal in the 400m relay at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Even at the age of 37 this year, she is preparing to compete in the 2024 Paris Olympics, which will be held a year later. At the 2021 event after giving birth to her son in August 2017, she reduced her previous 100m best of 10.70 to 10.60 by 0.10 seconds.
In an interview after winning the women’s 100m at the World Championships in Athletics last year, she said, “Unfortunately, for various reasons, the female athletes I used to run with left the track. But I want to show that women in their 30s can do it too.”
