An avalanche in the Alps, on the glacier of Armancetta (in eastern France, near the border with Italy) caused this Sunday at least four dead and several woundedconfirmed official sources.
The avalanche occurred at noon and the emergency services are still working on the scene, according to French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin via Twitter.
“At midday there was an avalanche on the Armancette glacier in the Alps. The provisional toll is 4 dead and several injured. The rescue teams continue to work. Thank you for your help. Our thoughts for the victims and their families”, Darmanin detailed.
The accident occurred on the Armancette Glacier at Contamines-Montjoie in the Haute-Savoie region, about 30 kilometers (20 miles) southwest of Chamonix. This is the Mont Blanc massif. The Alps are a popular holiday destination for the French at Easter.
Local broadcaster France-Bleu reported that the avalanche is 1,000 meters (3,280 feet) long and 100 meters (328 feet) wide. Two helicopters were sent to search for the people, the station said, citing Thonon prefecture as the source.
