Ukraine on Tuesday (26) accused Russia of attempting to “destabilize” Moldova and create tensions in the pro-Russian separatist region of Transnistria, where a series of explosions were recorded.
Referring to the occupation of the country by Russian troops on 24 December, Ukrainian presidential adviser Mikhailo Podoliak said, “Russia wants to destabilize the Transnistria region, which shows that Moldova should be prepared to receive ‘guests’.” said.
Multiple explosions were recorded at the headquarters of the Ministry of Public Security on Monday and at a radio transmission tower in Tiraspol, the capital of Transnistria, on Tuesday morning.
“Bad news: if Ukraine falls tomorrow, Russian troops will be at the gates of Chisinau,” said Podoliak, the capital of Ukraine’s neighbor Moldova.
“The good news: Ukraine will certainly be able to guarantee the security of the region. But we must work as a team,” he said.
Transnistria seceded from Moldova after a brief civil war in 1992, following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, of which both the country and neighboring Ukraine were part.
With a population of around 500,000, the separatist region has its own currency but is completely dependent on Russia, which provides free gas and has 1,500 military personnel stationed there.
