According to the prosecution, which cited a possible ninth missing person, they managed to identify the missing, among whom there are no children, due to the inability of their relatives to contact them.

The Marseille prosecutor acknowledged that “at the moment it is impossible to know the causes of the explosion” which devastated the building.

“The gas is obviously one of the clues” that authorities are contemplating, he added.

“It was huge, like an explosion,” Gilles, a man who declined to give his last name and who lives on a street perpendicular to the collapsed building, told AFP.

Since early Sunday morning, firefighters have been trying to put out the blaze which is preventing rescuers and sniffer dogs look for the missing among the rubble.
