The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall will arrive in Yellowknife on May 19 to conclude their three -day visit to the land of Canada.
According to the itinerary of Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles, they will be greeted by dignitaries at Yellowknife airport before traveling to the Dettah community to meet with Yellowknife Dene First Nation.
First Nation Chief Edward Sangris said in a statement that he looks forward to hosting these royal guests.
It will be an opportunity to show the world our wonderful community and the incredible people that make Dettah a special place.
Prince Charles and Duchess Camilla will take part in several community events such as an opening prayer, a drumming circle and a fire -feeding ceremony.
Then, the prince will participate in a discussion with local leaders and elders. According to Canadian Heritage media managers, this meeting was not intended to result in discussion fully structured.
It was more of an opportunity to learn and listen to community memberssaid a manager Tuesday at a technical briefing.
Earlier this month, Chief Sangris explained that he wanted Dene to talk to the prince and his wife. instead of just saying hello and shaking hands. What he was referring to was the visit of Prince William and Catherine Middleton in 2011 where only a handshake was exchanged, he said.
For her part, the Duchess of Cornwall will visit Kaw Tay Whee School to learn about Dene culturally appropriate and Wıı̀lıı̀deh Yatıı̀ language preservation efforts.
A busy program
The Prince of Wales will be made an honorary member of the Canadian Rangers on a visit to celebrate the 75th at anniversary of this organization.
The couples will visit a transitional accommodation center for women and children fleeing violence and will meet with climate change experts while walking along Dettah Ice Road.
They will end their visit by going to the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Center in Yellowknife where they will meet with local food producers and take part in a discussion on Treaty 11 while visiting a Tłı̨chǫ Government exhibit.
The day will end with the unveiling of a plaque at the Northwest Territories Jubilee Garden as part of the Platinum Jubilee celebration.
For Premier Caroline Cochrane, this royal visit is an opportunity to celebrate and showcase the Northwest Territories.

Prince Charles and Camilla’s last tour of Canada began in 2017, on the 150th anniversary of the confederation. The prince last visited the Northwest Territories in 1979.
Before heading north, Prince Charles and Duchess Camilla will visit St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador and the Ottawa area.
