“We are still investigating how this happened.as well as the extent of the problem. Steps are being taken to take a closer look at how this type of information is distributed and to whom,” Meagher added.

A steady stream of dozens of photos of documents have been found on Twitter, Telegram, Discord and other sites over the past few days, although some may have been circulating online for weeksif not months, before they started getting media attention last week.

Meagher declined to comment on whether the documents are genuine, saying a team at the Pentagon is working on making that assessment, but noted that the photos circulating online appear to show sensitive information.

“Photos appear to show documents similar in format to those used to deliver Daily updates to our best brass about Ukraine and Russia-related operations, as well as other intelligence updates,” he said, but some “appear to have been tampered with.”

This includes a document circulating online that appears to have been manipulated into proving that Ukraine has suffered more casualties than Russia, when the ostensible original version stated otherwise.

Many documents are related to Ukraine, such as one providing information on the country’s air defenses or another on international efforts to increase its military forces.

The allies

But others point to US surveillance of its allies, including one who claims to be the leaders of Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency supported national protests against a controversial judicial reform plan.

US officials have been in contact with Washington’s international allies on the matter and relevant congressional committees have been briefed, the Pentagon said.

Slimmer he declined to comment on whether the documents are genuine and said a Pentagon team is working to make that assessment, but noted that photos circulating on the web appear to show sensitive information.

The fallout from the apparent leak could be significant, even deadly, endangering US intelligence sources and providing valuable intelligence to the country’s enemies.

“Disclosure of sensitive classified material can have huge implications not only for our national security, but could lead to loss of life,”
