New York City, USA, has been plagued by rat infestations, and has appointed the first ‘rat czar’ in charge of rat eradication. This is New York City’s first rat extermination officer who will oversee the so-called ‘War on Rats’.

According to foreign media such as Reuters and CNN on the 12th (local time), New York Mayor Eric Adams appointed Kathleen Corradi, an employee of the city’s education department, as New York City’s first ‘rodent countermeasures officer’.

“Corradi has the knowledge, drive, experience and energy to drive the rats out and create a cleaner and more welcoming city for all New Yorkers,” Mayor Adams said. I am happy to be,” he said.

Corradi plans to work with city government agencies and community organizations to reduce rat populations across the city to help address quality of life and health concerns for residents.

Corradi has been at the forefront of reducing rat populations, especially while working for the Ministry of Education, leading the zero waste policy to reduce waste.

“Rat is a systemic problem, including sanitation, health, housing, and the economy,” Corradi said at the appointment ceremony. I will not tolerate it,” he said.

New York has been plagued by a citywide rat problem.

New York’s rat population is not exactly known, but urban legend has it that it exceeds New York City’s population of 9 million.

But a study led by statistician Jonathan in 2014 and based on rat sightings reported to the NYC Hotline estimated that there are about 2 million rats in New York City.

In recent years, rats have been known to appear more frequently in New York without being conscious of human gaze.

British media outlet The Sun released a video in February of a rat crawling on a human body in a New York subway. Also in 2015, a video of a so-called ‘Pizza Rat’ grabbing a pizza on the stairs of a subway in New York drew attention.

According to city officials, the number of rat sightings has increased significantly in recent years. In response, New York City spent millions of dollars to install lockable trash cans and deploy rat repellent, but it was not very effective.

Previously, New York City had posted an announcement seeking talent to catch rats to fight against the rats with an annual salary of 120,000 to 170,000 dollars (approximately 160 to 223 million won).

In fact, Corradi, who became New York City’s first rat catcher, will receive an annual salary of $155,000 (201 million won).
