US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said on Tuesday that Western countries can do “more” to help Ukraine defend against Russian invasion.
After visiting President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kiev, Austin chairs an extraordinary meeting of defense ministers from more than 40 countries at the US airbase in Ramstein, Germany, to discuss the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
“The urgency of the situation is known to all, and we can do more,” said the Pentagon chief. “Ukraine has done an outstanding job in defending itself against Russian aggression and the war for Kyiv will go down in the history books. But now with the offensive in the south and the situation in Donbass, the situation has changed and we need to understand what is happening. Ukraine needs to fight.” ‘ he added.
In addition, Austin accused the Vladimir Putin regime of inciting “an imperialist conflict” to “satisfy its own ambitions”. “It’s an insult to free people,” he said.
German Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht has confirmed that the country will allow the supply of the Gepard armored anti-aircraft tank to Ukraine. “We all know that artillery is a major factor in this conflict,” she said.
According to Lambrecht, Germany will train Ukrainian troops in the use of artillery systems. So far, Berlin has been cautious about supplying military equipment to Kiev.
