Peru’s election officials surprisingly dismissed the mayor of Lima, Jorge Muñoz, this Wednesday (27), exacerbating the political turmoil in a country known for frequent dismissals of its presidents.
Muñoz, 60, centre-right lawyer and politician, was dismissed without appeal for violating the City’s Organic Law by simultaneously joining the directory of the state-owned drinking water company in Sedapal, Lima. National Selection Jury, JNE.
JNE’s website states, “I determined the vacancy of municipal authority”.
The mayor, seen as a potential presidential candidate in 2026, replied on Twitter, “Thank you for your displays of solidarity in these difficult times.”
The JNE passed the decision after a complaint from citizen Carlos Hinostroza, who sought the dismissal of the mayor at the Lima City Council in 2021, but the latter blocked the process. He then applied to the Election Jury.
