Former US President Donald Trump is appealing a contempt conviction given by a New York judge for failing to comply with a subpoena issued by the state’s attorney general about his business practices, his lawyer said in a court filing Wednesday.

On Monday, Judge Arthur Engoron ruled that Trump had challenged justice for “repeated failures” to deliver materials to Attorney General Letitia James for a three-year civil investigation into whether the Trump Organization mishandled assets for financial benefit.

The former Republican president denies misconduct and has described the attorney general’s investigation as politically motivated. James is a Democrat. Trump defense attorney Alina Habba said at a hearing Monday that Trump did not have any of the documents James requested.

Engoron said he would be fined $10,000 a day until Trump complies with the subpoena. The judge said he did not provide sufficient evidence that Trump had thoroughly researched the documents.
