In the context of the presentation of The Crowded Room, the new miniseries in which he stars for Apple TV+, Tom Holland spoke about his addiction problem.
The 26-year-old actor, known worldwide for playing Spider-Man in the latest superhero film trilogy, said that the character he plays in the miniseries helped him “learn about mental health and its power”.
to do at danny, Holland spoke to psychiatrists and had to deal with his own traumas, he told Entertainment Weekly (EW). “I’m used to action series and had neglected my mental health“, commented.
the miniseries
The Crowded Room, inspired by Daniel Keyes’ non-fiction novel “The Minds of Billy Milligan(1981), follows in the footsteps of a psychologist (Amanda Seyfried) who must treat a young man accused of committing a brutal crime in 1979 New York.
Holland got so into character that there were moments where Danny – he confessed – took over him during the recordings. “At that moment I thought about shaving my head to get rid of it, but it wasn’t possible because I was filming,” he said.
Digging into his mental health issues has helped him try to overcome them. To achieve this, he had already taken an important step last summer by abandoning his social networks because they were “too stimulating and a little overwhelming”.
Holland believes The Crowded Room calls for “more respect and empathy with people who are going through a similar problem”, and is confident that there will be viewers who upon seeing it will recognize, like him, “the skills needed to survive”.
The Crowded Room will arrive on Apple TV+ (US) on June 9 and will have 10 episodes. It would mean Holland’s latest project until further notice. In February of last year, the actor said he would temporarily retire after filming the miniseries.
addictions
Conversation about his involvement in the character carried the actor to reveal that he has been sober for a year and four months. According to El Confidencial, his addiction problem had to do with alcohol consumptionbut this is not specified in the note with EW.
“It’s not easy because everything is against you. I remember when I announced I was going a week without drinking and my friend Ryan Reynolds sent me a box of whiskey,” he told her, recalling that “I was always drunk during delivery.”
To help other young people experiencing similar conflicts, Holland partners with several organizations dedicated to promoting mental health.
