Human remains were found in Pompeii, Italy, a famous tourist destination with traces of volcanic eruptions, for the first time in three years since 2020.

On the 16th (local time), British Guardian and others reported that archaeologists had excavated the remains of two men believed to be over 55 years old at the Pompeii site in Naples, Italy.

The discovery was made in the Casti Amanti area, where houses and bakeries are gathered among the archaeological sites of Pompeii. Casti Amanti is an area where many traces of buildings destroyed by the earthquake that occurred before Pompeii was buried in volcanic ash due to the great eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79 remain, and it is a place where continuous excavation work has been carried out.

The two skeletons found under the collapsed wall were in fairly good condition. At the time of the discovery, the remains were seen raising their arms against a wall as if to protect themselves, archaeologists said, suggesting that men fleeing from an earthquake that occurred early in the eruption may have died from multiple traumas caused by collapsed walls.

In the room where the remains were found, beads believed to have been used in a necklace and six coins believed to have been made in the middle of the 2nd century BC were also found.

Gabriel Zuctrigel, general manager of the Pompeii Archaeological Park, said, “This discovery made me realize a higher level of ‘hell’ among the tragedies of human history.” It is now possible to see the destroyed hell more clearly.”

This excavation is the first excavation of ‘human remains’ in about three years. Human remains were last found in a villa outside Pompeii in 2020. At the time, archaeologists said the remains of the two men were believed to be those of a wealthy man and his slave.

Italian Culture Minister Gennaro San Giuliano said, “Pompeii is a huge archaeological laboratory that has been revitalized in recent years.
