Nikki and her favorite cuddly toy are now resting in a warm, dry home after spending months outdoors. The road to recovery for the German Shepherd began in early May when pictures of the puppy circulated among residents of the Metro Detroit area in the United States.
“I received a few private messages and photos of this dog carrying his stuffed animal, and it was raining in downtown Detroit. It was heartbreaking,” Gail Montgomery, co-founder of Almost Home Animal Rescue League, an animal welfare NGO animals
The photos Montgomery received showed Nikki alone in the rain, with a stuffed animal in her mouth. The dog had been abandoned on the street after his owner’s death.
“We took her to an emergency hospital and they treated her. Unfortunately, she has heartworm and other problems. They found plastic bags, twigs and bones in his stomach.” Gail commented. However, she has received treatment and even adopted. It’s a family that gives him all the care he needs, as well as affection.
“He is constantly hugging his adoptive parents. She still sleeps with her stuffed animal, but she’s no longer obsessed with him like she was in Detroit,” the shelter’s assistant director said of Nikki’s personality change.
