Tina Turner has passed away at the age of 83 after battling a long illness. The news, released by her representative on Wednesday, brought to mind several episodes that have been sealed by fire in her life. AND many have to deal with tragedies.
Many of these sad chapters in Tina’s story took place while the singer was developing her career, which began in the sixties in the duo Ike & Tina Turner (shared with her husband).
Deaths, abandonments, mistreatment. Emotional and family conflicts have been a constant in her life behind the scenes. Let us therefore review the most relevant ones.
Parental abandonment
Tina has suffered from complications since she was a little girl. On November 26, 1939, her mother kept her in a windowless basement reserved exclusively for “colored” women.
When she was still called Anna Mae Bullock, she was abandoned by her mother. I was only 11 years old. Later her father did the same.
Lonely in life, Anna Mae was taken in by her cousin Margaret, the person with whom she would begin to suffer a string of unfortunate family deaths: Shortly after moving into Margaret’s home, her cousin was tragically killed in a car accident .
an abusive husband
Her bond with Ike Turner, her ex-husband with whom she started in the music business, has been completely zigzagging, but above all stormy. While she was with him she suffered psychological violence, sexual abuse, beatings and burns that left indelible marks on her.
“Broken lips, black eyes, dislocated joints, broken bones and psychological torment have become part of everyday life,” the singer would reveal years later.
When she split from Ike in 1976 she was broke. She lost all the money she had and had to draw strength where she didn’t have it to redo her path in the music world.
the loss of their children
Once retired from singing, she suffered the tragic death of her eldest son: Craig. When Craig was 59, he shot himself. It was 2018. Tina never found an explanation for what she did.
Four years later, the singer mourned the death of Ronald (“Ronnie”), her youngest son, from a terminal illness.
Health problems
Her own health also got in the way. In 1968, when her relationship with her husband was troubled, she attempted suicide by taking fifty sleeping pills. So it was her team who took her to the hospital to save her life.
In 2013 she had a stroke which forced her to learn to walk again and three years later she battled cancer which forced her to fight for her life.
The death of Tina Turner
Turner died today at his home in Kusnacht, near Zurich, Switzerland. “With her, the world loses a music legend and role model,” read a statement released by his rep.
A few minutes later, her social networks reported the sad loss: “It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Tina Turner. With her music and her boundless passion for life, she has enchanted millions of fans around the world and inspired the star of tomorrow.”
“Today we say goodbye to a dear friend who leaves us her greatest work: her music. Our sincere condolences go out to her family. Tina, you will be greatly missed,” the message concludes.
