UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Tuesday called for an independent investigation into “possible war crimes” committed in Ukraine.
“I am concerned about the constant reports of violations of international humanitarian law and possible war crimes. They demand an independent investigation,” the minister said at a press conference after meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
The UN chief stressed that the Secretariat of the multilateral organization does not have the authority to investigate allegations of violations of international law in Ukraine, but there are appropriate institutions for this, such as the International Criminal Court and various mechanisms in the human rights system. .
“I will not conduct this investigation alone. I am not authorized to do so. However, I find it extremely important to have an independent and credible investigation that will punish those responsible,” he said.
Kyiv has condemned war crimes in Ukraine, including forced deportation, rape and extrajudicial executions, especially in cities in the north and northeast of the country where Russian troops have withdrawn, but Russia denies it.
