‘Worst of the 21st century’ Crash after train derailment in India… at least 233 deaths

A passenger train collided with a freight train… 900 wounded

At least 200 people were killed and hundreds injured when three trains collided in India on the 2nd (local time). It is expected to go down in history as the worst train accident in India in the 21st century.

According to foreign media such as the BBC, AP and CNN on the 3rd (local time), Pradeep Jena, the highest-ranking government official in Odisha, said that two passenger trains and a freight train collided in Balasor, Odisha. It was announced that it had been repaired.

It also explained that at least 900 people were injured, and more than 100 doctors and 200 ambulances were dispatched to the scene for rescue work.

Officials at the scene expected the death toll to rise further.

Indian Railways authorities explained that 10 to 12 carriages of one train were derailed, some of which fell onto nearby tracks. The fallen carriage collided with another train, and three carriages were derailed in this train as well.

Odisha Prime Minister Naveen Patnaik said he would visit the scene of the accident on the morning of the 3rd to review the situation.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “We hope that the injured will recover quickly. All possible assistance is being provided.”

The Ministry of Railways, Communications, Electronics and Information Technology of India announced that it would pay compensation of 12,136 dollars (about 15.9 million won) to the bereaved families.

The Associated Press explained that despite government efforts to improve rail safety, hundreds of train accidents occur every year in India, which has the world’s largest rail network. In August 1995, a train accident near New Delhi killed 358 people.

In India, more than 12 million people board 14,000 trains every day.
