A popular Chinese YouTuber, who drew public outrage from domestic netizens by uploading a video of making kimchi and adding the hashtag ‘#ChineseFood’, is attracting attention by making a comeback two years later with a different look than before. There is a lot of discussion online about this.
Recently, the Hong Kong media South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported that Chinese YouTuber Li Tzu-qi (李子柒, 33), who has 17.7 million subscribers, announced plans to return in an interview with local media.
In the interview, Li Tzu-chi said, “In the future, we will create quality content that conveys Chinese agricultural culture and rural stories.”
Li Tzu-qi, from Sichuan Province, China, has gained great popularity since 2015 by posting videos on YouTube showing how he lives peacefully in a rural village. He also posted videos of harvesting crops or making handicrafts.
His YouTube subscribers reach 17.9 million, and his Douyin account has a whopping 49 million followers. In 2020, it set a Guinness record as the Chinese YouTube channel with the most subscribers.
However, the view of him domestically was not positive. This is because Ri Tzu-chi, who posted a video of making kimchi on YouTube in January 2021, added the hashtag ‘chinese food’. Many Korean netizens criticized this.
In a video titled ‘Last Life Series’, he showed himself making traditional kimchi by pickling cabbage in salt and adding stuffing. He even made kimchi stew by adding meat to kimchi taken out of a jar.
In the ‘private keywords’ of the video’s resources, you can see Chinese food, Chinese traditional culture, and Chinese food written in English.
However, Ritz-Chi’s last video on his YouTube channel in 2021 was in July 2021, and he suspended his activities for more than two years due to a legal dispute with his agency. And in December of last year, Li Tzu-chi announced the possibility of his return through SCMP and announced that he had reached an agreement with his agency through mediation in a Chinese court.
While fans are reacting enthusiastically to Ri Tzu-chi’s declaration of return, his appearance has changed significantly in recent appearances, attracting attention.
Netizens responded with comments such as “Your eyes and chin are so different from before,” “It looks like you got an injection,” “I like your previous appearance better,” and “Are you turning into a beauty influencer?”
