The U.S. Congressional Committee on Strategic Postures (CCSP) pointed out that North Korea is accelerating the deployment of nuclear-armed intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) sufficient to neutralize the U.S. missile defense system. He also emphasized that the United States must prepare for the possibility of simultaneous nuclear war with China and Russia.

On the 12th (local time), CCSP published a report examining the United States’ preparedness for strategic risks from North Korea, China, Russia, and Iran and suggesting countermeasures. CCSP is a bipartisan committee established under the National Defense Authorization Act last year.

In its report, the committee said that North Korea “continues to expand and diversify its nuclear forces, increasing the threat to the United States, its allies, and the U.S. military,” and “while maintaining a conventional military force capable of inflicting significant damage on South Korea, it is also maintaining a conventional military capability that can cause significant damage to South Korea, while at the same time pushing nuclear weapons further afield.” “We are prioritizing the development of ICBM technology that can be transported over long distances,” he said. North Korea analyzed this as an intention to secure military superiority on the Korean Peninsula while ensuring the long-term security of the Kim Jong-un regime.

In particular, the committee said, “North Korea is aggressively expanding its missile capabilities, including test-launching ICBMs several times in 2022,” and added, “We propose that the U.S. Department of Defense develop and deploy the Next-Generation Interceptor (NGI) as soon as possible.” He also said, “We recommend that the Director of the Missile Defense Directorate consult with the Northern Command and Strategic Command to determine the quantity of ground-launched interceptor missiles (GBI) and NGI needed to prepare for North Korean threats.”

The committee analyzed that the threats from China and Russia will become extreme between 2027 and 2035. He pointed out that China’s nuclear arsenal will be quantitatively equivalent to that of the United States by the mid-2030s, and that Russia currently has the largest nuclear force of any country.

The committee emphasized that “the U.S.-led international order and the values it seeks to protect are at risk from the authoritarian regimes of China and Russia,” and that “the U.S. and its allies must be prepared to simultaneously deter and defeat both adversaries.” . Reuters explained, “This contrasts with the Joe Biden administration’s position that the current U.S. nuclear weapons system is sufficient to deter China and Russia.”
