Kyiv police said on Thursday that the bodies of 1,150 civilians have been found in Ukraine’s Kyiv region since the Russian invasion, with 50 to 70 percent of them having minor gunshot wounds.
Kyiv regional police chief Andriy Nebytov said in a video posted on Twitter that most of the bodies were found in the city of Bucha, where hundreds of bodies have been found since the withdrawal of Russian forces.
Ukraine said civilians found dead in Bucha were killed by Russian forces during the occupation of the area. Reuters was unable to confirm the number of people found dead in Bucha or the circumstances of their deaths.
Russia denies attacking civilians since the February 24 invasion of Ukraine. He described allegations that Russian forces were executing civilians in Bucha while invading the city as a “monstrous fraud” designed to defame the Russian military.
Reuters asked the Russian Ministry of Defense for comments on the latest statement by the Kyiv police.
In the video, where he stood amid the rubble of buildings destroyed during intense fighting in the Kyiv region, Nebytov said, “To date, we have found, examined and delivered the bodies of more than 1,150 dead civilians to forensic institutions.” said.
I want to emphasize that these are civilian, not military,” he said.
The video was released on the day that United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres will meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy in Kiev.
Ukrainian television showed Guterres visiting the town of Borodyanka, where Zelenskiy said the situation was “significantly more dire” than in neighboring Bucha.
