The UN coordinator in Ukraine announced on Thursday that he will travel to southern Ukraine to prepare an attempt to evacuate civilians from the city of Mariupol, which is almost entirely controlled by Russian forces.
I am going to Zaporizhzhia to prepare the expected withdrawal from Mariupol, a strategic port city surrounded by Russians in southeast Ukraine, Osnat Lubrani said on Twitter.
Hundreds of soldiers and civilians, including children, are handicapped at the Azovstal steelworks in Mariupol, the last place in the city to be controlled by Ukrainian forces, according to Ukrainian officials.
The governor’s office calculates at least 20,000 dead, based on the balance of the war in Mariupol.
So far there has been no attempt to withdraw Azovstal.
According to Ukrainian authorities’ estimates, the UN has called for an “immediate” ceasefire in Mariupol to allow the evacuation of civilians trapped in the city of half a million inhabitants before the Russian invasion, which began on February 24.
