“We do not have a ‘stopwatch’ (to stop the war)” (Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant).

As civilian casualties are rapidly increasing due to Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip, which is ruled by the Palestinian armed group Hamas, the United States and Israel are showing differences of opinion over ceasefires and hospital bombings. Regarding the bombing of Al Shifa Hospital, the largest hospital in the Gaza Strip, and the loss of power supply, leading to the deaths of many premature babies and patients, U.S. President Joe Biden revealed his displeasure with Israel, saying, “Hospitals must be protected.” Israel claimed the legitimacy of the hospital attack by disclosing evidence that, in addition to Al-Shifa Hospital, the nearby Rantisi Hospital was also used as a command post by Hamas.

President Biden put pressure on Israel on the 13th, saying, “I hope there will be no action to invade the hospital.” Aide Sullivan also added, “Patients and hospitals must be protected.”

On the same day, Israeli military spokesman Daniel Hagari countered, “We have also confirmed evidence that Hamas used the basement of Lantisi Hospital as a command center for operations and detained Israeli civilian hostages.” He also revealed weapons such as guns and bombs that are believed to have been used by Hamas, as well as motorcycles.

There are also significant differences of opinion on the ceasefire. Hamas announced that a ‘5-day ceasefire’ was needed to release Israeli civilian hostages. Accordingly, Aide Sullivan also said that Israel should stop fighting in ‘several days’ rather than ‘several hours’ in order to release the hostages. However, Minister Gallant said, “The people of Gaza also do not trust the (Hamas) government. “Terrorists (Hamas members) are fleeing south of Gaza,” he said, making it clear that he had no intention of stopping the attacks.
