It’s warm in Moscow, but why is it freezing at minus 6 degrees in Shanghai?

The subtropical city of Shanghai… Strong cold for the first time in 40 years
Moscow near the North Pole… ‘2nd degree video’
The ‘Arctic cold wave’ that was destined for Europe has arrived in East Asia

The entire East Asia is suffering damage from the cold wave as the Arctic cold wave spreads from northeastern China and the Korean Peninsula to southern China, a subtropical region. On the other hand, temperatures in European regions, including Moscow, remain relatively mild at 0 to 10 degrees. The Korean Peninsula and the central United States are located along the path of cold air from the Arctic, so they are expected to face repeated ‘surprise cold spells’ this winter.

According to the Chinese state-run media Shanghai Daily on the 21st (local time), the lowest temperature in Shanghai, southern China, on this day was minus 6 degrees, the coldest weather in 40 years. On the same day, the weather in Moscow, the ‘Cold City’ recorded by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), was relatively mild at 2 degrees Celsius.

As such, various damages are being observed due to sudden cold waves in East Asia and abnormally high temperatures in Europe and other areas during the winter. In China, there are concerns about soaring prices of daily necessities, heating costs, and transportation paralysis due to extreme cold, while European countries such as Switzerland and Italy are on emergency alert to maintain the amount of snow needed for ski resorts, tourism, and hydroelectric power generation.

The Korea Meteorological Administration reported that this cold spell will continue until the morning of the 23rd and will gradually ease over the weekend.

However, as the Arctic cold wave is expected to continue to move south through the Korean Peninsula in East Asia and the central United States in North America, these regions are expected to have to endure intermittent severe cold this winter.

This is because the ‘jet stream’, which blows strongly from east to west above the Korean Peninsula and prevents Arctic air from moving south, has weakened due to global warming. In addition, meteorologists analyzed that the pressure ridge (a huge air mass caused by a high pressure difference) recently formed near the Ural Mountains blocked the flow of air from east to west and caused it to flow north to south, causing an Arctic cold wave to flow straight into the Korean Peninsula and the central United States.
