A Ukrainian ‘Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty’ producer died as a result of the Russian bombing of Kiev on Thursday, the broadcaster said on Friday.
“Journalist and producer Vira Gyrych died after a Russian missile hit the building she lived in. The bombing took place on April 28,” the Ukrainian branch of the US government-funded organization said.
According to the broadcaster, Vira started working in Kiev’s “Radio Liberty” newsroom in early 2018 after building her career in the press.
Russian troops launched a “high-precision” airstrike on Kiev during a visit by UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Thursday, Russia’s Defense Ministry said in a statement.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said in a statement on social media that rescuers found the remains of a person under the rubble. The broadcaster confirmed that it was Vera’s body.
According to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), at least seven journalists have died in Ukraine since the start of the Russian invasion on February 24.
