President Claudine Gay: “Resignation is best for Harvard”
Ambiguous position on claims of massacre of Jews… rain of criticism
Reappointed at Harvard, but suspicions of thesis plagiarism arise
The president of Harvard University, who was under pressure to resign due to his ambiguous stance on anti-Semitism, finally decided to resign. The school’s board of directors announced its stance on reappointment, but later appeared to raise a white flag as suspicions of thesis plagiarism arose.
According to CNN on the 2nd (local time), Harvard University President Claudine Gay said in a letter to Harvard University that day, “After consulting with members, I believe that my resignation will focus on institutions rather than specific individuals and marks a particularly challenging moment for our community. “It became clear that it was best for Harvard to help us get through this,” he said, expressing his intention to resign.
President Gay took office as president in July of last year, becoming the first black and second female leader in the school’s 386-year history. However, she ended up completing her term in just six months.
He appeared at a hearing before the U.S. House of Representatives Education Committee on the 5th of last month and became controversial by mentioning freedom of expression in relation to the alleged massacre of some Jews on campus. He later apologized through the school newspaper, but pressure for his resignation increased, especially in the political world.
There was also considerable public opinion opposing the resignation. Hundreds of fellow professors and thousands of alumni expressed their support. Harvard University’s Board of Trustees reaffirmed its confidence in President Gay after discussion on the 11th of last month.
However, as suspicions of plagiarism in the paper arose, pressure for his resignation increased again.
The paper in question was published in 1997, and Harvard University reviewed the paper last week and concluded, “We found several instances of inappropriate citations, but they did not violate Harvard’s research misconduct standards.” However, controversy continued as an investigation was announced at the Republican-led House Education Committee level.
President Gay was born in New York to a Haitian immigrant family, majored in economics at Stanford University, and then earned a doctorate from Harvard University.
Afterwards, he worked as a professor at Harvard University and conducted research on African governments and African Americans since 2006.
