Qasem Soleimani was widely respected in his country for his role in defeating the Sunni jihadist group IS in Iraq and Syria.

Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei promised those responsible for the “terrorist attack” in the southern city of Kerman “a tough response to this disaster”.

The detonations occurred as crowds gathered to commemorate the assassination of Soleimani, who died at the age of 62 in a 2020 attack by a US drone outside Baghdad (Iraq) airport. The soldier was head of the Revolutionary Guards’ Quds Force – Iran’s ideological army – and was responsible for Iranian foreign operations, especially in the Middle East.

The military’s popularity is still enormous today, at 83%, and higher than that of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi. He is considered a hero for his role in defeating the ISIS group in both Iraq and Syria. But the United States and its allies considered him a sworn enemy. Millions of people honored him after his death, as a sign of national unity.
