At ‘CES 2024’, the world’s largest information technology (IT) and home appliance exhibition held in Las Vegas, USA on the 9th (local time), big tech and mobility and distribution giants will compete over the next generation artificial intelligence (AI) technology. Google and Amazon are introducing mobility technology that incorporates AI, and global semiconductor giants are introducing a large number of ‘on-device AI chips’ that can use generative AI even without an Internet connection.

In the keynote speech, which provides an overview of this year’s global IT industry trends, global giants are scheduled to present management innovations that incorporate AI. The ‘AI revolution from ChatGPT’ is expected to spread to all industries and a large number of ‘unprecedented AI technologies’ will appear.

● Big tech focuses on on-device and mobility AI

This year’s CES is the first event held since ‘ChatGPT’, a generative AI introduced to the world by OpenAI in November 2022, became a sensation last year. As such, global big tech companies such as Microsoft (MS) and Intel are planning to showcase a large number of technologies at this CES that will make ‘ubiquitous (accessible from anywhere) AI’ a reality where AI can be used anytime, anywhere.

What is receiving the most attention is ‘on-device AI’. On-device AI is a technology that runs generative AI without the Internet. Previously, you had to use the Internet to access external servers such as the cloud. However, it is now possible to use AI within digital devices without an external server.

In particular, global semiconductor companies Intel and Qualcomm are expected to introduce their on-device chip technology in detail. Intel recently unveiled the ‘Core Ultra Processor’, which has a built-in neural network processing unit (NPU) specialized for AI calculations and can be used for deep learning. It is expected that a full-fledged AI PC era will begin with Samsung Electronics’ Galaxy Book 4, as well as global PC companies such as Lenovo, HP, and Dell, installing it.

Jeong Gu-min, a professor in the Department of Electronic Engineering at Kookmin University, said, “At last year’s CES, almost no ChatGPT-based technology was revealed. However, this year, there are quite a few companies that have reflected the ‘quantum jump’ technology called ChatGPT, so we should pay attention to how they incorporated it.” He said.

Global big techs have expanded AI into the area of mobility. MS plans to unveil an ‘AI assistant for vehicles’ that combines its cloud computing platform, Azure, and ChatGPT, and Amazon Automotive plans to unveil AI technology used for autonomous driving. Google plans to further enhance ‘Android Auto’, which allows you to control or drive a vehicle with voice, and unveil it at CES.

Among automakers, Mercedes-Benz announced that it would unveil ‘MBUX virtual assistant’, which combines AI with the infotainment system ‘MBUX’. Hyundai Motor Group also plans to introduce the technological direction of utilizing AI for software-driven vehicles (SDVs).

●Beauty tech and healthcare incorporating AI

At this year’s CES, ‘beauty tech’ using AI is also attracting attention. As boundaries between industries are blurring, AI is becoming deeply involved in the way consumer goods companies develop and market products.

L’Oréal is introducing a skin care application (app) using AI at this CES. It is known that when you apply makeup on your face in augmented reality, AI will suggest makeup or skin care methods based on this. L’Oréal’s CEO Nicolas Ieronymus will also be the beauty industry’s first CES keynote speaker.

LG Household & Health Care is unveiling the portable wireless printer ‘Imprint2’ that tattoos clothes or the body using designs created by LG Group’s giant AI ‘ExaOne’.

Domestic startup companies are releasing a large number of AI healthcare technologies. Yellowsis, a startup that started as an in-house venture of Samsung Electronics and became independent in 2020, plans to unveil technology that uses AI to detect health abnormalities, including diabetes, by analyzing urine.

TenMinds, another domestic startup, introduces AI pillow ‘Motion Sleep’. It is equipped with technology that measures oxygen saturation and noise level and moves the airbag in the pillow to help you sleep well.

● Global giants also gave keynote speeches on “AI Innovation”

AI is also the main character in the keynote speeches that will be held sequentially from the 9th to the 12th (local time) during the CES exhibition period. Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger and Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Armon are expected to introduce the present and future of on-device AI.

In particular, in this year’s keynote speech, a large number of heads of companies other than electrical and electronic companies are expected to attend and announce management directions incorporating AI. The leaders of Nasdaq (finance), Walmart (distribution), Elevance Health (health insurance), and Best Buy (electronics distribution) introduce the services and consumer experiences that AI is changing.

In this respect, the slogan of this CES was set as ‘All Together, All On’. Jongyoung Yoon, a professor at Kookmin University’s College of Software Convergence, said, “The keynote of this CES is that AI is everywhere,” and added, “Global companies will try to show how AI has been more organically applied to their businesses.”
