EU Commissioner Breton: “Remarks made by President Trump”
“They say they are leaving NATO… “I might come back as president again.”
Thierry Breton, European Union (EU) Commissioner for Domestic Markets, revealed that former US President Donald Trump had said that he would not contribute to European defense when he was in office. At the same time, he raised the possibility of former President Trump winning the U.S. presidential election in November.
According to foreign media outlets such as the Guardian, Politico, and the Jerusalem Post on the 10th (local time), Commissioner Breton said at an event related to the European Parliament the previous day, “Former President Trump said Ursula von der Ley at the 2020 World Economic Forum (WEF, Davos). “I met with the European Commissioner and said, ‘We must understand that if Europe is attacked, the United States will never come to help or support us,’” he said.
In addition, “Former President Trump said, ‘The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is dead. “We will leave (NATO),” he said.
At the same time, he warned, “(The comment) was a big alarm,” and added, “He may come back.”
He continued, “Now more than ever, we know that we must be self-reliant. “Almost all of us are NATO members,” he said. “Of course we have allies, but in order to be prepared for whatever happens, we have no choice but to significantly increase this pillar.”
At the time, former President Trump told Chairman von der Leyen, “You owe me $400 billion. “Because you Germans did not spend on defense,” he added.
This is a remark aimed at Chairman von der Leyen, who served as Germany’s Minister of Defense for nearly six years.
This is consistent with former President Trump’s past remarks, in which he called for an increase in Europe’s share of NATO defense costs while discussing withdrawal from NATO.
The US Republican Party will begin its Iowa caucuses on the 15th. Until the national convention from July 15th to 18th, the Republican Party will begin a six-month long process to finally select the party’s presidential candidate.
