The Ecuadorian Prosecutor’s Office announced on Wednesday that it will launch an investigation against José Serrano, former Minister of the Interior during the government of Rafael Correa, for the alleged dissemination of information considered confidential on the murder of public prosecutor César Suárez, shot down by assassins in the city of Guayaquil.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office, in a message, describes Suárez’s crime.

Serrano posted it on his X account Suárez allegedly asked for information on the tax files of José Adolfo Macías Villamar ‘Fito”s wife, the leader of the “Los Choneros” criminal gang who escaped from the regional prison of Guayaquil.

“A great prosecutor murdered, the great majority of honest and professional prosecutors at risk and some rogue infiltrator who needs to be exposed who he is,” Serrano wrote in the tweet.

The former official served in the Correa government between 2011 and 2016, until he left office to take up a seat in the National Assembly (Legislative Bridge).

Because of that message, the Public Prosecutor initiated the complaint by inviting citizens “not to spread speculation that could benefit criminals or people wanted by the law”.

After learning of the announcement of the opening of the investigation by the Prosecutor’s Office, Serrano insisted that “an investigation is urgently needed to determine who leaked the information requested by Prosecutor Suárez to the criminals who ordered him to be killed.”

This Thursday the Ecuadorian police arrested two people allegedly linked to Suárez’s murder, according to police sources. “We have arrested 2 suspects involved in the murder of prosecutor César Suárez, in Guayaquil, after an investigative procedure that allowed us to identify their alleged participation in the criminal act,” wrote the general commander of the police, César Zapata, in a X’s post

According to the official, a rifle, two pistols, troughs and two vehicles were seized from the detainees.

Suárez had recently interrogated the thirteen detainees who took an armed assault on the TC Televisión channel on January 9 and held its workers hostage for several hours during a live broadcast.

The murder of the prosecutor occurred in the middle of state of emergency due to “internal armed conflict” declared by the Government against 22 organized crime gangs, mainly dedicated to drug trafficking, and which the Executive has classified as terrorist groups and belligerent non-state actors to be neutralized by the police.

The Prosecutor said that the Prosecutor’s Office has undertaken the first investigations into Suárez’s murder and after expressing condolences to his family, assured that his legacy will accompany the Prosecutor’s fight against crime.
