“Taylor Swift is a secret agent for the U.S. Department of Defense?”

With all kinds of novels running rampant ahead of the November presidential election in the United States, even top pop star Swift has become embroiled in political conspiracy theories. CNN and other sources estimated on the 31st of last month (local time) that “the origin is the far-right Republican Party, which was concerned that Swift, who supports the Democratic Party, would exert influence.”

According to local media, the conspiracy theory started in September last year when Swift encouraged her fans to participate in the election on social media. With one word from Swift, new voter registrations increased by 35,000 in just one day. This is a point where we can gauge Swift’s influence, to the point where a new word was coined, ‘Taylornomics’, which refers to Swift’s revitalization of the local economy.

Since then, MAGA (Make America Great Again), a Republican faction that supports former President Donald Trump, and far-right media have continued to raise Swift conspiracy theories. Many say that Swift is actually a secret agent for the Department of Defense and is building up her fan base for President Joe Biden’s re-election.

In particular, the conspiracy theory intensified recently when the Kansas City Chiefs, of which Swift’s boyfriend, professional American football (NFL) player Travis Kelce, played, advanced to the championship game ‘Super Bowl’. Even Vivek Ramaswamy, who withdrew from the Republican primary, added fuel to the fire on social media on the 29th of last month, saying, “I wonder who will win the Super Bowl,” and “I wonder which candidate the couple receiving artificial support will support this fall.”

Swift publicly supported President Biden, then the Democratic presidential candidate, in the October 2020 US presidential election. He also announced in the 2018 U.S. midterm elections that he would vote for Democratic candidate Phil Bredesen for the Tennessee State Senate. The New York Times (NYT) reported, “President Biden is considering various scenarios to gain Swift’s support once again in this presidential election.”
