snake rodeos

What are snake rodeos? Annual events are often held in the western and southern United States where caught snakes (mainly rattlesnakes) are sold, displayed, and killed for food or animal products.

These rodeos originated in the first half of the 20th century as entertainment and to fight local pests.

Over time, the meetings where snakes were killed began to resemble fairs celebrating the animal, with commercial stalls, food, attractions and shows informing about rattlesnakes. However, there are still events in Alabama, Georgia, Oklahoma and Texas where animals continue to be slaughtered.

In Pennsylvania, snake rodeos actually became educational shows where exposed rattlesnakes, after the show, were returned to the wild.
