South Carolina poll: Trump 63%, Haley 35%
With the South Carolina primary, the second primary for the U.S. Republican Party, just four days away, there are predictions that former President Donald Trump will completely defeat former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley here as well.
A public opinion poll released by USA Today on the 20th (local time) showed that former President Trump had an overwhelming lead over former Ambassador Haley in South Carolina with an approval rating of 63% to 35%. South Carolina is where former Ambassador Haley served as governor.
South Carolina, like New Hampshire, which held its primary last month, selects candidates by popular vote rather than party member voting. Former Ambassador Haley, who has suffered consecutive defeats in the primary, has been focusing her campaign with the aim of making a leap forward in her home state.
In particular, he has been preparing for the primary by targeting moderate votes instead of the party’s support centered on MAGA (Make America Great Again), the hard-line supporters of former President Trump. However, today’s results suggest that former Ambassador Haley’s future path in the primary will not be smooth.
In the same survey, when looking at preferences for each candidate, former President Trump was found to be higher at 64%, which was higher than former Ambassador Haley (47%). The unfavorable rating for each candidate was 25% for former President Trump and 36% for former Ambassador Haley.
USA Today assessed, “South Carolina voters like Nikki Haley, but they like Donald Trump more.” In addition, 90% of voters who expressed a favorable view of former President Trump responded that they actually plan to go to the primary and vote.
However, among moderate voters, former Ambassador Haley was ahead of former President Trump. Former Ambassador Haley received the support of 59% of self-identified moderate voters, while former President Trump received the support of 38%.
This survey was conducted through wired and wireless methods on 500 South Carolina voters who had a strong intention to participate in the primary from the 15th to the 18th. The sampling error is ±4.4% points.
