POLITICO reported on the 20th (local time) that the U.S. government is trying to persuade Russia to refrain from testing its space weapons development.

Senior U.S. intelligence and government officials had been in contact with Russia for weeks through mediation in China and India, according to anonymous officials, before House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Turner called for the information to be released.

Information obtained by the United States indicates that Russia is preparing to test a space weapon that destroys satellites with nuclear weapons.

The officials added that the U.S. government is concerned that efforts to persuade Russia, which are in the early stages, will fail if this information is widely disclosed, and that intelligence sources will disappear if detailed information is made public.

Officials said that Russia has not responded to any discussions since the information was made public last week, and that U.S. officials are becoming increasingly concerned about the possibility of Russia testing a satellite-destroying space nuclear weapon.

Senior U.S. intelligence officials have been tracking information about Russia’s development of satellite-destroying space nuclear weapons for more than a year, and concerns have grown in recent weeks that Russia is preparing to launch an actual launch.

Accordingly, senior intelligence officials, the White House, and the State Department developed a plan last month to prevent Russia from carrying out the test by putting diplomatic pressure on Russia through intermediaries.

U.S. officials contacted China and India to emphasize the risk that space weapons developed by Russia could destroy the satellites of both countries, and made plans to meet with representatives from both countries at the Munich Security Conference on the 17th.

National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan was scheduled to explain this plan to House Intelligence Committee Chairman Turner, but Chairman Turner urged the disclosure of the information, and the news of Russia’s development of space weapons was widely highlighted.

U.S. Secretary of State Tony Blinken met with Chinese and Indian foreign ministers in Munich and other places in recent days.

National Security Council (NSC) spokesman John Kirby said on the 14th, “Intelligence authorities are very concerned that the information has been made public. “We believe it will be much more effective to start with private contact rather than immediately disclosing information,” he emphasized.
