Video: Five killed when small plane crashes on US highway

Five people who were on board a small plane They died Monday night when the plane crashed near an interstate highway in Nashville, Tennessee. The reasons that caused the fatal outcome are still unknown.

Official sources confirm that the pilot made an emergency call at John C. Tune airport, around 7.40pm, a few seconds before crashing: he had warned of engine problems.

After the warning, it received the green light to make an emergency landing, according to Don Aaron, a spokesman for the Metropolitan Nashville Police. A few seconds later, the pilot radioed that the plane would not be able to reach the airport.

The video taken by security cameras is widespread. On one side you see vehicles traveling on the highway and a car crossing the screen horizontally and the subsequent explosion: the entire image remains blank. In the other shot, more distant, we see the explosion of the plane, on the side of the road and the plane enveloped in flames and smoke.

The plane caught fire after colliding with grass near Interstate 40, behind a Costco. The crash site, west of the city, was about 4.8 kilometers from the airport.

The police then clarified this in a statement on the social network five people on board the plane had died and noted that federal authorities were investigating the incident.

There were no injuries to motorists on the highway, Nashville Fire Department spokeswoman Kendra Loney said. No vehicles or buildings on the ground were damaged.

The crash resulted in the closure of I-40 East at mile marker 202, Tennessee Department of Transportation Region 3 spokeswoman Rebekah Hammonds confirmed.

The National Transportation Safety Board and the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration are investigating the crash.
