THE Presidential elections will be held in Venezuela on July 28in the second half of the year, as agreed between the government and the opposition at the negotiating table, the electoral authority said on Monday.
The president of the National Electoral Council (CNE), Elvis Amoroso, announced in a press conference that the board of directors of that body had “unanimously” approved the election date. President Nicolás Maduro is expected to seek re-election.
The official also explained that the electoral campaign will last 21 days: it will take place from 4 to 25 July.
The calendar also states that there will be a special period for voter registration, both national and international, which will run from March 18 to April 16.
The date chosen was the one that received the greatest support from political organizations during the consultation process promoted by the National Assembly (Parliament), controlled by Chavismo, including the Somos Venezuela Movement, the closest ally of the ruling party PSUV.
