The director of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, traveled to Russia on Tuesday, where he will meet President Vladimir Putin to talk on the “precarious” situation of the nuclear power plant Ukrainian from Zaporizhia.
Europe’s largest nuclear power plant was seized by the Russian military in March 2022, and both Moscow and Kiev have accused each other of jeopardizing its security.
“I think it is very important to maintain this high-level dialogue with both belligerents,” Grossi said Monday. “It’s my intention (to meet)” with the Russian president, he added.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zajárova confirmed Monday that Grossi will soon travel to the country for “a series of high-level meetings.”
The head of the IAEA said he would like that discuss “some technical points” with the Russian president and get “an idea of what the plans are” for the plant.
Grossi last met Putin in St. Petersburg in October 2022 to discuss the security of the plant, amid conflict in Ukraine.
He has visited Ukraine on several occasions to meet with President Volodymyr Zelensky and other senior officials.

Since the beginning of the Russian offensive in Ukraine, Grossi has repeatedly warned of the risk of a serious nuclear accident.
