Auction in the UK… Successful bid for 33.9 million won, double the expected price
The most famous costume from the drama ‘Pride and Prejudice’
Colin Firth’s costume, which became a hot topic in the wet shirt scene in the popular BBC drama ‘Pride and Prejudice’, was sold at a high price at the auction market.
According to the Associated Press on the 6th (local time), Britain’s Kerry Taylor Auctions auctioned Colin Firth’s shirt, and it was sold for 20,000 pounds (about 33.9 million won), double the expected price of 10,000 pounds (about 17 million won). Adding the auction house fee, the total price reaches 25,000 pounds (about 42.3 million won).
Kerry Taylor Auction auctioned 69 costumes actually worn by actors in dramas and movies, and the linen shirt worn by Colin Firth was the most popular item. Information about the buyer was not revealed.
Colin Firth played the male protagonist, Mr. Darcy, in the BBC’s six-part drama adaptation of Jane Austen’s popular novel ‘Pride and Prejudice’ in 1995.
The scene in which Firth swims in a pond and then walks out wearing a wet white linen shirt was once selected as the most memorable TV moment in the UK. The shirt worn at this time was put up for auction. After this scene, he was given the title ‘Sexiest Male Actor’.
The shirt was made by Cosprop, the costume shop of Academy Award-winning costume designer John Bright. It is reported that there was a trace of ‘C.Perth’ written in pen under the label on the inside of the shirt.
At the auction on this day, a 1950s Christian Dior taffeta ballgown worn by Madonna in the 1996 movie ‘Evita’ was sold for 40,000 pounds (about 67.9 million won). Also, the costume worn by Johnny Depp in the movie ‘Sleepy Hollow’ was sold for 24,000 pounds (about 40.7 million won).
Proceeds from the auction will be donated to the Bright Foundation, an arts education charity founded by John Bright.
