Save the Children, an international children’s rights NGO, is recruiting schools to participate in ‘Climate World Created by Children’, a children’s participatory climate crisis education content.
The climate world created by children is educational content that enables future generations of children to understand the connection between the climate crisis and children’s rights and participate in responding to and overcoming the climate crisis. The target group is first-year elementary and middle school classes nationwide. Professional instructors called ‘Earth Saver’ can be dispatched to provide direct training, or teachers can receive training and provide training. ‘Practice classes’ that apply for education after teacher training will be supported with the costs of the applicant teacher’s training, educational content, and practical learning activities.
Last year, 11,739 elementary and middle school children participated in 11 regions across the country, including 454 classes taught by Earth Saver and 92 practical classes run directly by teachers. Among the children who completed the training, 5,659 people who participated in the satisfaction survey found that the majority of the children answered that they were satisfied with the program and would like to take similar classes again, with a score of 3.52 out of 4.
The educational effect was also found to be good. To the question, ‘Do you know the causes and effects of the climate crisis?’, the responses of ‘I know well’ and ‘I know well and can explain it to others’ increased from 60% before training to 84% after training. To the question, ‘Will you practice activities to protect the climate environment in the future?’, the percentage of respondents who answered ‘I will actively practice it’ and ‘I will practice it depending on the situation’ increased from 35% to 67%.
A 6th grade child who participated in the training said, “While taking the class, I learned about climate inequality and did activities with my friends to distinguish between the causes of the climate crisis and the climate actions we can take part in.” “I was able to do it,” he said.
A Save the Children official said, “Last year, the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child published General Comment No. 26, ‘Environment and Children’s Rights with a Focus on Climate Change,’” adding, “We recognize that the climate crisis is a crisis of children’s rights, and we recognize that the “We plan to continue the ‘climate crisis and children’s rights’ project for the future,” he emphasized.
