How did David Miller become a NASA employee without even applying for the job? The young Californian spent eight years in the American space agency, but arrived there without having any previous experience without even knowing what it would be exactly its role.
He never applied for the job and when they called him for the interview they didn’t tell him that was it National Aeronautics and Space Administration. So what happened?
Graduate mechanical Engineering and with a major in aerospace engineering from the University of Washington, David Miller was simply looking for a job which had to do with aircraft maintenance. I found an offer From Boeing, In Texas, in which he asked a mechanical engineer. When they also called him to schedule the interview They offered him to apply for another job.
“There’s a different piece of work we think you might like and it’s about being a manipulator in the interactive graphic and kinematic analysis team”, they proposed to him. Miller had no idea what it was or how it was made.but when you’re looking for a job you can’t afford to close any doors. He agreed to go to both interviews.
He only had one interview (the one with Boeing) and the recruiter who had contacted him called him back after a few weeks with the news that had been hired. Miller thought it was for the position of mechanical engineer, but in reality he had been selected for the other job: “One with whom I have never had a conversation and of whom I understood nothing.”
David moved to Texas without knowing he would be working for NASA. “I didn’t know the details because they hired me without interviewing me specifically for that position. So I went there and on the first day of that job I understood everything“he explained in a TikTok video that went viral.
While he was completing orientation documentation and instructions on his role, David realized that he was doing a completely different job than he had imagined.
Was this all a big NASA stunt?
“I don’t think the contracting process was intentionally confusing or secretive, I just think Boeing is a large NASA contractor, and they really needed people. “I actually had a colleague (Karl) who got hired a week before me, and it was basically the same thing for him,” the young man explained on BuzzFeed.
“I’m pretty sure they just needed the team staffed quicklyso they made it possible from the pool of candidates already in their system.”
In 2015, Miller left his job at NASA to return to Los Angeles with his family. But he remembers with great affection the time spent in the powerful company: “I was able to work on things that went into space, physically touch them and make a difference. “I was also in Mission Control when things were happening in space, like spacewalks and docking.”
Now, his work has nothing to do with ships, but his story at NASA continues to surprise thousands of people.. So much so that the video, originally shared by his girlfriend, Heather Trip, has almost piled up 10 million views on TikTok.
