An article from BBC provides a series of recommendations to strengthen memory, one of the pillars of a powerful mind.

Exercise. Better cardiovascular health means bringing more oxygen to the brain and eliminating toxins. Furthermore, in the open air, physical activity allows good absorption of vitamin D, which is synthesized in the body only with exposure to the sun. Therefore, doing regular physical activity surrounded by greenery and in the company of other people helps cells create new circuits, which translates into satisfactory brain activity.

Eat well. Since about 20% of sugar and energy intake goes directly to the brain, its function depends on glucose levels and, if they are out of control, can cause confusion. So, you need to eat foods that release dopamine, the reward hormone. But you also have to fill your stomach, where there are trillions of microbes interconnected with the brain. Its balance transforms the stomach into the “second brain”. Therefore, maintaining a healthy diet is essential.

Disconnect. Stress is necessary for life because it helps us respond to threats through the production of cortisol. However, feeling anxious and stressed for a long time is very harmful. The article recommends “disconnecting” so that the brain rests and exercises the usually inactive areas. Fantasizing, or daydreaming, is important for maintaining memory. Relaxation techniques, such as yoga or meditation, are effective in keeping cortisol at bay.

Learn something new. At any age, stimulating the brain to study, for example, a language, increases its elasticity. THE BBC recommends playing online with friends or family because it provides a challenge, as well as more social interaction.

Listening to music. Science has shown, through brain imaging, that people who listen to music or play an instrument have almost all regions of that organ active. Music helps strengthen general cognition and memory.

Get up well. Sleep is of great importance. Therefore, we must follow the recommendations of World Health Organization (WHO) and sleep between seven and nine hours a day. If you sleep less than five hours, your mind won’t be as alert, while if you sleep more than ten, you may experience something similar to jet lag. You have to sleep with the room in the dark and wake up with the light gradually becoming more intense. This light penetrates through closed eyelids and prepares the brain to have a better awakening response, regulated by cortisol, a hormone that determines how the brain will behave during the rest of the day.
