Russia, Nazis World War II. Today, he abandoned the idea of holding a military parade in Mariupol, Ukraine, on May 9, the anniversary of his surrender to Soviet troops in World War II.
When questioned about the matter, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said it is “impossible for obvious reasons” to hold a parade at the moment.
Peskov also denied that Moscow would send an entourage to Mariupol on 9 May. “I don’t know about an official delegation,” he said.
The possibility of a military parade on Victory Day was raised in mid-April by Viktoria Kalachova, who, after taking the city, was appointed by the Russians as deputy mayor of Mariupol.
“No doubt the people of Mariupol will be waiting for this event,” he said at the time. However, despite Russia taking over the urban area of the city, the Ukrainian resistance continues to fight at its last stronghold, the steelworks Azovstal.
The industry is the target of constant bombing by Moscow forces and is still home to around 200 civilians in addition to military personnel and members of the far-right militia Azov Battalion.
“The situation at the steel mill is critical and is getting worse,” Mykhailo Vershynin, one of the soldiers based in Azovstal, told the BBC. “Worst of all, we still have civilians in air raid shelters,” he added.
Russia also launched a ground offensive to try to seize the industry, possibly to achieve a complete victory at Mariupol before 9 May.
