The world’s wealthiest nations must deliver on their commitments to keep alive the goal of avoiding the worst effects of climate change, US Special Envoy John Kerry told Reuters on Saturday.
Progress is vital as Egypt prepares to host COP27, the next round of UN climate talks, to be held in Sharm el-Sheikh in November, Kerry said.
For the summit to be successful, the world’s 20 richest countries, representing 65% of the world’s gross domestic product, must commit to limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, as they promised at the UN meeting in Glasgow last year. I said.
“This is very important,” Kerry said in the interview. “These 20 countries are responsible for 80% of greenhouse gas emissions. If these countries act, we will solve the problem.”
He said some progress has been made, but not enough, and changes need to happen more quickly.
Kerry said that dealing with global crises such as the Kovid-19 outbreak and the war in Ukraine has shifted the focus away from climate change initiatives.
