US First Lady Jill Biden made a surprise visit to Ukraine on Sunday and met her Ukrainian counterpart, Olena Zelenska, at a school used as a shelter for displaced civilians, her spokeswoman said.
Jill Biden said, “I wanted to come on Mother’s Day. I thought it was important to show the Ukrainian people that this war must end and that this war is brutal and that the US people stand with the Ukrainian people.” she told reporters.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at Irpin
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is also in Ukraine on Sunday for an unannounced visit. According to Ukrainian media, the mayor of the city, Olexandr Markushin, said, “He went to Irpin to see all the horrors that the Russian invaders have done in our city. And of course he was shocked.”
According to local media reports, Trudeau will meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and reaffirm Canada’s unwavering support for the Ukrainian people.
Located on the outskirts of Kiev, Irpin was the scene of fierce fighting between Russians and Ukrainians in the early days of the Russian invasion in late February.
