King Salman of Saudi Arabia, 86, was taken to the hospital for a colonoscopy and other medical tests, the royal palace said in a statement.

The weakened king has been leading the Saudi kingdom, the world’s largest oil exporter and the Arab world’s largest economy, since 2015.

On Saturday, he was admitted “for some medical checkups” at King Faisal Hospital in the coastal city of Jeddah, according to an official report.

“God bless the Keeper of the Two Holy Mosques and be in good health and peace,” the statement said.

The Saudi SPA agency reported that doctors performed a colonoscopy in the afternoon and the result was positive.

“The medical team has decided to keep him in the hospital so he can rest,” he added.

It is rare for Saudi authorities to publish information about the monarch’s health.

In 2017, Saudi Arabia denied growing speculation that the king was planning to abdicate in favor of his son, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who became the de facto ruler.

King Salman had surgery to remove his gallbladder in 2020 and had a herniated disc in 2010.

He was most recently hospitalized in March to have his pacemaker replaced, which state media described as “successful medical checkups.”
