Papua New Guinea is located in what is called the Pacific Ring of Fire, which is an area of high seismic and volcanic activity due to the friction of tectonic plates.
In February 2018, a 7.5 magnitude earthquake caused landslides, destroyed homes and killed at least 125 people.
